In support of this national response, this project is undertaking the following areas of work: A substantial number of individuals take immunosuppressants to manage chronic diseases. There is great anxiety amongst this community regarding whether immunosuppressants increase risk of COVID-19 infection or the severity of its symptoms – this is currently unknown. We will analyse data from the C-19 Symptom Tracker app to address these questions. We will use statistical models to disentangle the risks due to immunosuppressants from the risks due to other medications, health problems and sociodemographic factors.
Specifically this project aims to assess the impact of immunosuppressant use on COVID-19 infection risk and likely disease course. By comparing longitudinal data against timings of government shielding/social distancing recommendations, we will aim to assess the benefit of shielding/social distancing to individuals taking immunosuppressants relative to the rest of the population. Anticipated outcomes of the project are COVID-19 risk estimates for individuals taking immunosuppressants that can inform the decision-making described above.
